WHITE TWP. [December 9, 2006] – The Warren County Health Department wishes to remind everyone to begin the year with resolutions that will promote healthier and happier living. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is promoting the following “Twelve Ways to Health”:

1. Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds. Washing hands is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs.

2. Bundle up to stay warm. Exposure to cold temperatures can cause serious health problems, especially for infants and the elderly.

3. Manage stress. Avoid over-commitment and overspending. Don’t let the holidays cause excess anxiety and take a toll on your health.

4. Don’t drink and drive. Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 seconds and non-fatality crashes injure someone every two minutes.

5. Be smoke-free. Live a healthier life and lower your risk for disease by avoiding smoking and secondhand smoke.

6. Fasten your seat belt while driving. Wear a seat belt every time you drive or ride in a motor vehicle. Buckle your child in the car using a child safety or booster seat until they are ready for a regular seat belt.

  7. Get health exams and screenings to find problems early when they are easier to treat. Schedule a yearly exam and recommended screenings

8. Get vaccinated and vaccinate your children to prevent infectious diseases. Don’t forget a flu vaccination each fall.

9. Watch your children carefully while they are playing and eating. Keep dangerous toys, household items and food out of the reach of children.

10. Practice fire safety. Most residential fires occur during the winter months. Injuries from fire and fireworks often occur around the holidays. Use caution when burning candles and install smoke alarms on every floor in your home.

11. Prepare food safely. Many people become ill and are hospitalized each year due to food-borne bacteria. Clean food preparation surfaces thoroughly and cook food immediately after defrosting to the proper temperature.

12. Eat well and exercise. Most people tend to eat and drink more calories over the holidays. Eat five to nine fruits and vegetables daily, limit portion sizes and find fun ways to stay active..
