(WHITE TWP., October 24, 2007) – The Warren County Board of Chosen Freeholders proclaimed November 4, 2007 as “Displaced Homemaker Awareness Day” to endorse quality training and education programs necessary for displaced homemakers to secure employment.
“As a recent heart attack victim, I understand life… and circumstances can change very quickly,” said Freeholder Director Everett A. Chamberlain. “The ability to retrain people, allowing them to go on with their lives and be productive and provide for their families is very important,” Chamberlain added.
NORWESCAP’S Career and Life Transitions Center for Women is a local organization that provides support services, vocational counseling, career training, and job readiness assistance to displaced homemakers of Warren County. The women aided by this program are members of the community who have lost their primary means of financial support due to divorce, separation, or the death or disability of a spouse.
“After an average divorce, a woman’s standard of living falls 73 percent,” said Patricia Moonjian, Program Director of the Career & Life Transitions Center for Women. Children also are affected if the woman is the primary custodial parent, added Moonjian. The support and resources provided by the Transitions Center enables such women to obtain the quality training and education necessary to secure employment, allowing them to support themselves and their children.
Freeholder John DiMaio said he was only too happy to vote for this proclamation. “To have access to a service such as this Transitions Center so that a person can be trained, stand on her own two feet and not have to rely on the government to take care of herself and her children – this is good work,” said DiMaio.
“We live in a time when our cost of living is significant, and anything can happen in our lives,” said Freeholder Richard D. Gardner. “This Transitions Center is vitally important; it fills an enormous void for folks who may have some unfortunate circumstances, and gets them back into a good mode,” Gardner said. |

The November 4 activities will include the Transitions Autumn Family Fest & 5k Run/Walk, an annual event to be held at Meadow Breeze Park in Washington Borough from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds from the endeavor will go towards scholarships for clients of the Transitions Center for Women to attend formal training.
