The American Dream of having your own plot of ground and custom-built home can still be a reality in Warren County. Throughout the county are many beautiful home sites ranging in size from one to 10 acres. These are in addition to the many homes for sale in existing communities, or being built major developers. As of the 1990 census, there were 36,589 housing units in the county with an estimated 39,435 by 1998.

Relative affordability is a keynote which can be used to describe Warren County homes. Land and taxes are less expensive than in other areas of northern New Jersey. The price of existing home range from $60,000 to $600,000, while those currently being built by developers generally range from $175,000 to $275,000. These new developments are close to existing communities and accessible to highways, schools and shopping.

Generally, most of the new developments are located in the southern part of the county near I-78, with the central part of the county, which is crossed by I-80, is still primarily made up of large homesites with custom-built homes.

 
Any kind of setting is till available within the county. This ranges from the urban or suburban community where you can talk with your neighbor over the back fence, to condos where you may not even know your neighbor, to rural settings where horses, cows, sheep, rabbits and squirrels may be your neighbors, to remote areas where deer, bears, raccoons, coyotes, wild turkeys, hawks and owls are your neighbors. Even they are good neighbors, as long as you leave them alone, or don't entice them with a handout.

This wide diversity of housing and settings has enabled people at all income levels to achieve the American Dream in Warren County and in a recent survey, 92% of the respondents rated the county a good or very good place to live.
